Color Performance
Cholesteric Liquid Crystal (ChLCD) can freely mix RGB colors, achieving 16.78 million colors. With its rich color palette, it is well – suited for commercial displays that demand high – quality color representation. In contrast, EPD (Electrophoretic Display Technology) can only reach up to 4096 colors, resulting in relatively weaker color performance. Traditional TFT, on the other hand, also offers a rich color display.
Refresh Rate
ChLCD has a relatively fast full – color screen update speed, taking only 1 – 2 seconds. However, color EPD is rather slow in refreshing. For instance, a 6 – color EPD ink screen takes approximately 15 seconds to complete a screen update. Traditional TFT has a fast response rate of 60Hz, making it ideal for displaying dynamic content.
Display State After Power – off
Both ChLCD and EPD can maintain their display states after power – off, while the display on traditional TFT fades away.
Power Consumption
Both ChLCD and EPD feature a bistable characteristic, consuming power only during screen refreshing, thus having low power consumption. Traditional TFT, although its power consumption is relatively low as well, is higher compared to the former two.
Display Principle
ChLCD works by utilizing the polarization rotation of cholesteric liquid crystals to either reflect or transmit incident light. EPD controls the movement of micro – capsules between electrodes by applying voltage, with different aggregation densities presenting various grayscale levels. Traditional TFT operates in a way that liquid crystal molecules are arranged in a helical pattern when no voltage is applied. When voltage is applied, they straighten out, affecting the passage of light and thereby controlling the brightness of pixels.
Viewing Ang
ChLCD offers an extremely wide viewing angle, approaching 180°. EPD also has a wide viewing angle, ranging from 170° to 180°. Traditional TFT has a relatively wide viewing angle too, between 160° and 170°.
Cost
As ChLCD has not yet been mass – produced, its cost is relatively high. EPD, having been mass – produced for many years, has a relatively low cost. Traditional TFT also has a low cost due to its relatively simple production process.
Application Areas
ChLCD is suitable for applications that require high – quality color, such as color e – book readers and digital signage. EPD is more appropriate for applications with less color requirements, like monochrome e – book readers and electronic shelf labels. Traditional TFT is well – suited for price – sensitive applications that demand quick response, such as electronic devices and displays.
Maturity
ChLCD is still under improvement and is yet to reach widespread adoption. EPD technology is mature and has a high market share. Traditional TFT technology is also well – established and widely applied.
Transmittance and Reflectance
ChLCD has a transmittance of about 80% and a reflectance of 70%. Transmittance for EPD is not mentioned, while its reflectance is 50%. Traditional TFT has a transmittance of 4 – 8% and a reflectance of less than 1%.
